Can I select the JELD-WEN company where I intern?
You can apply for an internship at one or more of the JELD- WEN companies participating in our intern program this summer. Our desire is to match the student with the company most likely to provide an excellent internship experience while minimizing the expenses, travel and general demand on the student.
Will I have an on-site interview and tour of the company before I accept an internship?
You will have an opportunity to visit the location and interview with the general manager who will be supervising your internship before a final decision is made. When the travel distance is significant, a telephone interview will be conducted instead of an on-site interview.
Will my travel expenses for the on-site interview be paid for by JELD-WEN?
Applicants who are invited to interview at the JELD-WEN company will be reimbursed for their travel expenses.
How will I be supervised during my internship?
The general manager of the JELD-WEN company will be the primary contact for an intern. Additionally, interns will work directly with other JELD-WEN managers when the program shifts from one business function to another.
Will I be able to take time off during my internship?
The specific timing of your internship should be discussed with the general manager during your on-site interview. Any requests for time off during the internship should be agreed to between the intern and the general manager before you each commit to the internship.
Do I qualify for company-provided health insurance and/or holidays?
While employed as an intern, health insurance and other benefits provided to full-time JELD-WEN managers will not be provided to interns. Interns are covered under workers compensation insurance for any job-related injuries. If the timing of your internship includes Memorial Day, Fourth of July and/or Labor Day, you will celebrate those paid holidays just as other managers in the JELD-WEN company celebrate them.
What are the normal work hours?
Each JELD-WEN company sets its operating hours and the hours differ slightly between companies. Most companies have a second and third shift. Since JELD-WEN provides a management internship as contrasted with a general work experience, we expect interns to work with the same schedule as the JELD-WEN manager they are assigned to work with during various segments of the internship. Therefore, whenever the intern's supervising manager works on the second or third shift, or on a weekend, the intern will work the same schedule. Interns are paid a salary of $1100 every two weeks plus overtime.
Will I receive assistance in locating housing during my internship?
In most instances, the general manager or other managers will be able to provide suggestions for locating short-term affordable housing. Additionally, interns can obtain a cash advance of up to $600 for paying housing deposits, transportation, and other beginning of the internship expenses. Any cash advances taken are repaid through deductions from your paychecks that are paid every two weeks.
Will I need to provide any special clothing or protective equipment?
Normal work clothes are appropriate. Any required personal protective equipment will be supplied by the company.
Does the JELD-WEN internship provide academic credit?
We believe that the student has the primary responsibility for determining if a JELD-WEN internship qualifies for academic credit offered by the student's college or university. Accordingly, you should investigate this subject with the responsible career center person or faculty member if you would like to earn academic credit.
The JELD-WEN company that you are assigned to will provide the necessary documentation to confirm the content of your internship
